Look Up and Move On

All bitterness, anger and wrath, insult and slander must be removed from you, along with all wickedness. And be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving one another, just as God also forgave you in Christ.
EPHESIANS 4:31-32 HCSB

The world holds few if any rewards for those who remain angrily focused upon the past. Still, the act of forgiveness is difficult for all but the most saintly men and women. Are you mired in the quicksand of bitterness or regret? If so, you are not only disobeying God’s Word; you are also wasting your time.

Being frail, fallible, imperfect human beings, most of us are quick to anger, quick to blame, slow to forgive, and even slower to forget. Yet as Christians, we are commanded to forgive others, just as we, too, have been forgiven.

If there exists even one person—alive or dead—against whom you hold bitter feelings, it’s time to forgive. Or, if you are embittered against yourself for some past mistake or shortcoming, it’s finally time to forgive yourself and move on. Hatred, bitterness, and regret are not part of God’s plan for your life. Forgiveness is.

Be so preoccupied with good will that you haven’t room for ill will.   ~E. Stanley Jones

Acrid bitterness inevitably seeps into the lives of people who harbor grudges and suppress anger, and bitterness is always a poison.   ~Les Strobel

Anger breeds remorse in the heart, discord in the home, bitterness in the community, and confusion in the state.   ~Billy Graham

Bitterness is the trap that snares the hunter.   ~Max Lucado

TODAY’S PRAYER
Heavenly Father, free me from anger and bitterness.
When I am angry, I cannot feel the peace that You intend for my life. When I am bitter, I cannot sense Your presence. Keep me mindful that forgiveness is Your commandment. Let me turn away from bitterness and instead claim the spiritual abundance that You offer through the gift of Your Son. Amen

    Today is my birthday
    Rejected, neglected, alone,
    Today,
    My birthday.
    Thanksgiving.
    Thank you.

I have the process the resentment
    I am not a priority.
You would rather be with your therapist’s family.
She is more important than me.
    Today is my birthday.
    Today is Thanksgiving.
    Alone.
    You are my family.
    Today.
    Gone.

No more do I ask “Why?”
    No more do I share.
    What are you teaching me?
    This moment to process?
What can I learn from a daughter who prefers New Age lies to the one who created her?
What can I learn from a son who’s not there, running away from God?

You said today to the caller who wanted to forgive,
That you have to journal or talk it through with someone.
I am told I cannot just forgive them.
I am told I have to grieve and go on.
    How long? Prolonged.

    It doesn’t matter.
    That’s life.
    Let your expectations die.
    They are accountable.
    They have their own lives.
    It’s 2009.

How many other mothers are disillusioned with unrealistic expectations? Holidays? Who cares.
Not my son. Not my daughter. They have their own lives to live.
I can’t quite understand why I am so hurt.
    It’s Thanksgiving. It’s my birthday.
    No one to care.
“Oh, I’m sorry,” those therapists words would ring from your mouth.
Not really. Those are just words.
    Get over it.
    How nice. How sarcastic.

You know how I feel? That you hate me.

But I won’t let this root of bitterness prosper.
I forgive you now and for all the times past and present and future.
For all the times you’ve made me sad.
    You can’t make me mad.

I’ve lost so much hope, there’s none left in me.
I’ve given up thinking there’s hope
Ever of having any part of your life.
I’m your mother, but who cares.

I’m having a hard time being alone right now
    Feeling rejected and hurt and–well
It’s my birthday today and it’s Thanksgiving.

    I hope you’re happy.
    It’s your choice.

    Let it go.
    Forgive them.
Keep your focus on the ONE who loves you.
