‘I have a slow metabolism’, ‘I don’t have time to workout’, ‘I have big
bones’, ‘It’s just my baby fat’, and on and on the list of excuses
goes! We all use them and believe they have a magical power to relieve
us of the responsibility of our weight problem. It would be great if we
could find a valid excuse, yet it would still be just that, an excuse!
Basically it all comes down to the fact that we do what we want to do.
What is your excuse? I have my own, ‘I never used to be heavy’; it seemed like an invitation to say ‘you look fine.’ But I knew the reality; I didn’t make time to exercise and paid little attention to my diet. Well excuses aren’t good for anything! It doesn’t help you get to the weightless feeling and it keeps you from discovering what you need to change to experience weightlessness, not being defined by what you weigh!
I recently hired a personal trainer. It was the ‘one’ thing I hadn’t tried. She began working with me by taking all the measurements, fat percentage, etc. Now that is cause to make an excuse! The information gives you the facts! No excuses, just the facts! When we started she asked what goals did I have in mind, I answered ‘to not have to exercise again.’ Even though it was truthful, it was not reality! She laughed and had me do crunches! I began to meet with her twice a week and saw results immediately. Now the only excuse I try to use is ‘not having time to work out.’ I tried that last week, and noticed the difference in how I felt.
It is amazing how when you incorporate change into your life, whether it is physical, spiritual, emotional, and our mindset, our excuses lose steam. We begin to realize we didn’t really want to make the changes necessary for our well being. What is your excuse? Write it down now. What came to your mind when you read that question? It’s not what you’re telling others as much as what you are telling yourself that will sabotage your goals.
Challenge yourself to not use excuses. Explore what you need to change in your life and begin the process one step at a time. If we do what we want to do, what are your choices saying about you? No excuse is good enough to keep you from living a life free from the burden of excuses!
